The Religion of Wonder | Book Review
Review of Narendra Murthy's book - The Religion of Wonder
Is there a
God somewhere who can be found outside the domain of the temples, churches and
mosques? Beyond the rituals, incense and rosary beads; beyond the scriptures,
beyond the theological disputations? Who answers to the innate need of man for
a higher purpose? When we cry out for a meaning behind "all this?" We
live in a fantastic, miraculous and mysterious universe. So, who or what is
behind this great Magic show? Can we hope to know? What is His nature? How does
He manage to hide from us thought being Omnipresent? Let us set sail into this
ocean of mystery. Let us explore.
Book #35 of 2024
Nonfiction #19
This is my third read by this author, and I've found it to be a delightful
addition to my collection of nonfiction books.
In
humanity's pursuit of understanding existence and seeking fulfillment, there is
a notable exploration of Science and Religion, accompanied by an emerging
conflict between the two.
Within this
book, the author presents complex topics in easily understandable terms across
four enlightening chapters. The first chapter delves into the historical
contexts of magic, the rise of priestly clans, agrarian civilizations,
fertility rituals, and the emergence of institutionalized religion—including
the symbolism of totem poles. Many of these ancient practices and beliefs echo
in modern society, albeit in more diluted forms.
Subsequent
chapters explore the evolution of human intellect and rationality, heralding an
era of reasoning dominated by intellectual giants. This era also marks a
significant shift from viewing humans as intertwined with nature to treating
nature as an external entity to be studied, probed, and exploited—a shift that
birthed the mechanical worldview of the universe. The author probes how science
while displacing religion, struggles to provide values, purpose, and meaning to
humanity, as evidenced by persistent global issues like war, poverty, disease,
and social conflicts.
Despite
scientific progress and technological advancements, the enduring need for
spiritual and religious frameworks remains evident. In the final chapter, the
author synthesizes diverse topics, from inquiries into the origins of the
universe to contemplations on the nature of God as a mathematician—a
thought-provoking exploration that delves into the intersection of mathematics
and nature.
The book
features profound explanations and includes captivating quotes that enhance its
allure. Extensive research is evident in the detailed works consulted section,
underscoring the depth of scholarship behind this work. Richly illustrated with
pictures and diagrams, the book offers a visually engaging reading experience
that complements its substantive content.
This is not
merely a book on a singular religion but a guide through the spiritual journey/science,
presented in accessible language suitable for anyone seeking to deepen their
understanding in this field. The author's incorporation of diverse cultural
perspectives adds a compelling layer of appeal to the narrative.
Overall,
this comprehensive and insightful book earns a well-deserved rating of 5 out of
5 stars, offering a rewarding exploration of the intersection between science,
religion, and spirituality.

Professionally,
Narendra Murty worked as a Divisional Manager in the Life Insurance industry.
However, the deep driving passion of his life has been the study of various
religions and philosophies - both Eastern and Western - to which he has devoted
more than three decades of his life. His first book EATING HIS MONEY – The
Antics of a Metaphysical Clown, contains his commentaries on twenty-five
stories of Mulla Nasrudin, the enigmatic clown. The book is an expression of
his understanding of Sufi philosophy which he illustrates with concepts derived
from all the wisdom traditions of the world making this subtle knowledge easily
accessible to the general lay readers.
Adjudged the
Best Book in the Pioneer Literature Awards, 2024, his second book AN ODYSSEY OF
THE MIND – Journeys in the Modern Mindscape, is a collection of twenty deeply
thought-provoking essays written over a period of ten years. The subjects
include psychology, philosophy, history, sociology, the impact of technology,
ecology, political philosophy and even a couple of humourous and satirical
jibes on our politics, society and culture.
His third
book titled THE RELIGION OF WONDER is an attempt to define religion outside the
context and framework of the organized religions. It is also a call to all
atheists and agnostics to sincerely explore their own negation.
Winner of
the LIFT Awards 2024, his fourth book is on Zen Buddhism titled AN OAK TREE IN
THE GARDEN - Exploring the World of Zen where he has provided enlightening
commentaries on thirty enigmatic and enchanting Zen stories.
Apart from
this, he has a YouTube channel where he explores various ideas pertaining to
religion, philosophy and spirituality. Presently he is devoted full time to his
study and writing. Narendra is also working as a Research Associate at Sri
Aurobindo Society, Pondicherry and writes every month for their online journal
Renaissance.
Until the next post...
