Island In the Sun | Book Review
Review of Monica Carly's book - Island in the Sun
Book #18 of 2024
Non-fiction #12
My
repertoire of nonfiction reads has now reached a dozen, thanks to the
delightful addition of this captivating book!
The author
transports readers into her world in Jamaica, sharing her rich tapestry of
experiences in this new environment. From cover to cover, I was enraptured by
the heartfelt narrative that effortlessly brings to life the vivid scenes from
her life.
The author
masterfully recounts her journey from childhood through to navigating a new
school, cherishing moments with friends and siblings along the way. What truly
struck a chord with me was the vivid depiction of culinary delights - from
Gladys’ mouthwatering pastries in the tuck shop to the tantalizing aroma of
rice and beans, and the irresistible allure of ice creams.
Moreover,
the book resonated deeply with me as I found echoes of my own experiences
within its pages. Reliving the nostalgia of childhood haunts and the challenges
of uprooting to a new place evoked a flood of memories. Additionally, the
inclusion of numerous black-and-white photographs provided a richer insight
into the various facets of the author's life.
Emotional
resonance permeates the narrative, from the relatable instances of schoolyard
embarrassment to the heartwarming moments shared with loved ones. Witnessing
the struggles of the author's mother as she pours over the accounts trying to make
ends meet, the heartbreak and the elation of witnessing the college almost in
ruins, and then knowing the restoration of cherished college takes readers on
an unforgettable emotional rollercoaster.
The cover
perfectly captures the essence of the book and I absolutely love it!
I found
myself completely engrossed, devouring the book in a single sitting. Without a
doubt, it earns a well-deserved 5/5 star rating.
