Review of the book - How Boys Learn by Jeff Kirchick

Book #17 of 2024

Non-Fiction - #11

When I initially picked up this book, my expectation was to delve into the realm of boys' experiences, upbringing, and all the nuances associated with boyhood. With a 12-year-old son at home, I anticipated an insightful exploration that would shed light on his world. However, as I delved into the pages, my expectations took an unexpected turn.

The book presents a series of short stories, each offering a glimpse into the male perspective of life. What struck me most was the emotional depth woven into these narratives. From tender moments of friendship to the complexities of love and sexuality, the stories delve into the intricacies of male relationships and emotions. Moreover, the author fearlessly addresses the harmful impacts of toxic masculinity, highlighting how societal norms can detrimentally affect boys and men alike.

As I immersed myself in these stories, I found myself confronted with a myriad of emotions. Some moments resonated deeply with my own experiences, while others felt slightly disjointed. Nevertheless, the overall effect was both insightful and thought-provoking.

One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its ability to illuminate the complexities of the world through the male lens. By providing a platform for male voices to express their truths, the author offers readers a deeper understanding of the male experience.

Despite deviating from my initial expectations, this book proved to be a refreshing departure from the norm. Its poignant narratives and thought-provoking themes earned it a solid 4/5 stars in my eyes. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper insight into the male perspective and the complexities of masculinity in today's society.
